Senior AI Engineer, Location AI at Mapbox

Role overview

Mapbox builds real-time location tools, data, SDKs and APIs used by developers and location-aware businesses. This senior AI engineering role works across Search and Places, Location and Navigation Intelligence, and platform capabilities for agents.

The role owns technical design and delivery of multi-component AI systems and is remote from the specified country.

Responsibilities

• Define product behavior, measurement frameworks and evaluation systems for non-deterministic AI behavior.
• Run continuous evaluations of APIs, SDKs, data representations and reference applications; identify integration gaps and drive fixes.
• Build ingestion, conflation, entity-resolution, quality-check, batch and streaming data pipelines.
• Evaluate external datasets, models and benchmarks and decide when to adopt them or build internally.
• Design model and tool boundaries, feedback loops, model harnesses and agent workflows, with latency and cost targets for each request.
• Build internal CLI, MCP and other tools, review designs and code, and participate in an on-call rotation for 24/7 availability.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline and 5+ years of software engineering experience owning production services, pipelines or SDKs.
• At least 2 years shipping LLM-backed features to real users in systems with error budgets and on-call responsibilities.
• Data engineering depth with SQL, a distributed processing framework and pipelines where data correctness matters.
• Experience with tool calling and agent orchestration, including stale context, hallucinated arguments, partial success and unbounded-loop failure modes.
• Strong Python or TypeScript skills, experience designing evaluations for non-deterministic systems, and the ability to diagnose distributed-request latency.
• Helpful experience includes geospatial data, public APIs or SDKs, MCP, CI evaluations, automotive systems, voice pipelines or constrained compute.
