Role overview

A new Grafana Labs team is developing a context-management layer that makes observability information usable by people and AI-assisted tools. The staff engineer owns core backend architecture as the product moves from prototype to reliable production service.

The Canadian posting excludes Quebec residents.

Responsibilities

Build services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration, source configuration and administration.
Design a multitenant SaaS foundation with isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs and background jobs.
Create APIs for agents, MCP tools and applications to retrieve context, provenance and confidence signals.
Instrument services with metrics, logs, traces, alerts and dashboards and operate them in production.
Set service boundaries and deployment patterns while balancing experimentation with long-term reliability.

Qualifications

Experience building production software used by real customers and taking ownership in ambiguous work.
Practical understanding of AI applications, LLMs or agent workflows rather than prototype-only experience.
Cloud-native systems experience on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure and observability for production services.
Ability to iterate from feedback and collaborate across product and infrastructure teams.
Data platforms, retrieval systems, analytics or data-engineering tools are useful additional background.
