Role overview

Kake is a remote-first global engineering community. This Senior Android Video Player Engineer role focuses on production live-video playback for Android and Android TV.

The work owns playback reliability end to end in a high-scale streaming environment.

Responsibilities

Design, develop and optimise Android video-player frameworks and SDKs for live streaming.
Customise ExoPlayer components, adaptive-bitrate logic and player builders to improve playback performance.
Troubleshoot buffering, latency, rebuffering and other live-playback issues across network conditions.
Work with DASH and HLS manifests, adaptive bitrate workflows and ad technologies including IMA, DAI and SSAI.
Integrate QoE analytics such as Conviva, Mux or Hydrolix and use the data to improve real-world playback.
Collaborate across teams and contribute streaming best practices and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Seven or more years of Android development experience with strong Kotlin and Java skills.
Production experience building video players or live-playback components for Android or Android TV.
Hands-on ExoPlayer customisation and performance optimisation for live streaming.
Experience debugging playback stability, latency and rebuffering, plus familiarity with DASH, HLS, adaptive bitrate and ad integrations.
Experience with Jetpack Compose, Kotlin Coroutines and Flows, and excellent English communication.
Ability to work independently in a remote environment; broadcasting, OTT or large-scale sports streaming experience is helpful.
