Senior Software Engineer, Mobile (Android) at Grab

Role overview

Come join the Communications Engineering team! The Interactive Comms team at Grab revolutionizes how people connect and communicate on the Grab platform, spanning multiple Apps and Web. We are on an exciting mission to shape the future of communications as our platform evolves, weaving social interactions, groups and more.

You will manage the Android engineering surface for Grab's Interactive Communications products — real-time chat, VoIP calling, and number masking. You'll work across the full mobile lifecycle: architecture decisions, feature delivery, SDK integrations, and production stability. You will report to the Engineering Manager.

This is a senior IC role where you'll be expected to lead system design for Android, mentor mid-level engineers, and partner closely with product, design, QA, and backend teams to ship high-quality features that connect millions of passengers, drivers, and merchants daily. This role will be onsite in HCMC.

Responsibilities

• Design Android applications using Kotlin and Java, following best practices and architectural patterns.
• Build user interfaces following Material Design principles and Maintain user experience across several devices and screen sizes.
• Integrate RESTful APIs and backend services, ensuring efficient data communication and synchronization.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code with comprehensive unit and integration tests using frameworks such as JUnit, Espresso, and Mockito.
• Optimize application performance, identify bottlenecks, and Build solutions to enhance speed and efficiency.
• Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members, encouraging a culture of continuous improvement.
• Troubleshoot and debug complex issues, using analytical skills to identify causes and Build solutions.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to translate requirements into technical specifications.
• Stay current with Android ecosystem developments, new technologies, and industry best practices.
• Contribute to Agile ceremonies and contribute to sprint planning, estimation, and retrospectives.
• Mentor junior developers and Help with their professional growth through guidance and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional Android development experience in experience in shipping production applications.
• Advanced proficiency in Kotlin and Java programming languages.
• experience in Android SDK, lifecycle management, and modern architecture components (MVVM, MVP, Clean Architecture).
• Solid experience in RESTful API integration and backend service usage.
• Proficiency with version control systems, Git.
• Demonstrated expertise in implementing responsive UI/UX designs and Material Design principles.
• experience in testing frameworks and a commitment to writing testable, maintainable code.
• Experience approaching a problem from different angles, analyzing pros and cons of different solutions w.
• Experience reviewing code to find and address potential issues and defects.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
• Experience communicating updates and resolutions to customers and other partners with the Able to collaborate across team.
• experience in Jetpack libraries and modern Android development frameworks.
• Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices.
• Exposure to third-party libraries and dependency management tools.
• Understanding of mobile security best practices and secure coding principles.
• Contributions to open-source Android projects.
