Role overview

Extreme Networks’ AI Core group builds generative AI platforms for its cloud networking products. The work spans AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation, knowledge bases, data mining, anomaly detection and LLM fine-tuning. The team aims to build systems that help manage networks in real time.

This principal engineer leads technical direction and stays hands-on across architecture, code review, implementation, deployment and operations. The employer lists Seattle, Washington and San Jose, California in the position details, while marking the posting remote. The posting does not define whether work can be performed outside those locations.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for machine learning solutions across products and platforms, and mentor other engineers.
  • Lead design, testing, deployment and operation of software systems; participate in design and code reviews.
  • Design high-scale microservices and synchronous and asynchronous web services.
  • Build real-time inference for complex models using Triton, TensorRT and mixed-precision computing.
  • Improve system resilience, scalability, engineering rigor and operational processes.

Qualifications

  • Degree in mathematics, computer science or a related field.
  • Five to ten years across the software development lifecycle, including design, coding, reviews, testing, builds, deployment and operations.
  • Five to ten years of Python experience, with advanced language and library knowledge.
  • Hands-on REST API design, including technologies such as FastAPI.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and modern CI/CD practices.
  • At least three years leading the design and architecture of large distributed systems, preferably on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, serving as a technical lead or leading an engineering team.
  • Preferred: an MS or PhD in computer science or equivalent ML experience, plus exposure to PyTorch, SageMaker, Triton, TensorRT, NoSQL and large-scale data processing.

Role-specific candidate guide

Preparation notes based on the employer’s stated responsibilities and qualifications.

Understanding the scope. This AI Principal Machine Learning Engineer (10189) position at Extreme Networks is best assessed through the work described in the employer’s posting, rather than the title alone. The available role overview says: “Extreme Networks’ AI Core group builds generative AI platforms for its cloud networking products. The work spans AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation, knowledge bases, data mining, anomaly detection and LLM…” Read that statement together with the responsibilities below to understand the likely balance between delivery, coordination and technical decision-making. The role belongs to the AI and data area, but that label is only a guide to the work; the employer’s own requirements remain decisive. Before applying, check the original listing for reporting lines, product or team assignment, employment terms and any details that may have changed since this copy was checked. Where this page says a fact is not specified, treat it as an open question rather than an implied promise.

What the responsibilities signal. The posting specifically names “Set technical direction for machine learning solutions across products and platforms, and mentor other engineers.”; “Lead design, testing, deployment and operation of software systems; participate in design and code reviews.”; “Design high-scale microservices and synchronous and asynchronous web services.”. For each duty, identify a project where you performed comparable work and be ready to describe the context, your own contribution, constraints, decisions, and measurable result. Explain how you moved from the initial need to implementation, review, release or operational follow-through, where those stages apply. If the work involved other teams or users, distinguish your decisions from the group’s contribution. Avoid presenting a technology keyword as proof by itself: connect it to the problem.

Benefits

  • Anticipated base salary is USD 170,000–240,000 per year, depending on qualifications and work location; the role is also eligible for a performance bonus.
  • The U.S. benefits described include medical, dental and vision insurance, paid time off, holidays and retirement savings with 401(k) matching.
  • The employer also lists an employee stock purchase program, eligible adoption and fertility support, assistance programs, tuition reimbursement, and life and disability insurance. Eligibility varies by role and location.
